As we kick off a new year, travel magazines and influencers are buzzing with their top travel predictions for the year ahead.
This year, TimeOut Magazine has crowned the enchanting Indonesian island of Sumba as the top destination in Asia for 2025. With its pristine landscapes and rich culture, Sumba is the ideal place to extend your Bali vacation into an unforgettable two-stop adventure.
What Makes Sumba Stand Out?
In its annual list, TimeOut ranked Sumba in the top spot, followed closely by Siargao in the Philippines and Da Nang in Vietnam. Other noteworthy destinations include Tainan in Taiwan and Osaka in Japan. However, Sumba’s unique charm truly sets it apart.
A World Apart from Bali
Sumba is not just a smaller version of Bali; it’s a vast paradise that takes a good seven hours to traverse from one end to the other by car! This lesser-known gem is perfect for those seeking adventure away from the crowds. During my last visit, I was mesmerized by the sheer beauty of its rolling hills and exquisite beaches, which felt like my own personal slice of heaven.
Why You Should Add Sumba to Your Itinerary
You might have heard of Sumba because of its lavish resort, NIHI Sumba, which ranks as one of the 50 Best Hotels in the World for 2024. Many travelers flock to this sanctuary known for its stunning beachfront and unique experiences such as horseback riding along the shore. However, there are numerous beautiful hotels and villas sprinkled across the island, like the dreamy Lelewatu Resort Sumba and the elegant Sanubari.
TimeOut’s travel expert, Delfina Utomo, shares that Sumba is renowned for its idyllic beaches like Nihiwatu—once dubbed the world’s best beach—and its breathtaking natural landscapes. Imagine exploring Weekuri Lagoon, a spectacular natural saltwater pool. Just the thought of taking a refreshing dip there gives me wanderlust!
Must-See Sights in Sumba
When in Sumba, don’t miss out on:
- Nihiwatu Beach
- Weekuri Lagoon
- Waririnding Hills, with its lush scenery
- Prajing Village, the heart of Sumbanese culture
If you’re on the lookout for something special in your Bali vacation in 2024, consider distributing your two-week escape between Bali and Sumba—it’s more accessible than ever!
Your Easy Gateway from Bali to Sumba
As of January 2025, you can effortlessly travel between Bali and Sumba with four daily flights from Denpasar to Tambolaka Airport (TMC), thanks to Wings Air and Nam Air. These flights depart from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, making the connection a breeze.
For example, Nam Air has flights at 9 am and 11:40 am, landing at 10 am and 12:40 pm. This means letting the beauty of Sumba complement your Bali adventure is totally feasible!
However, keep in mind that Tambolaka is a domestic airport, so you’ll need to return to Bali to catch international flights home.
Why Explore Beyond Bali?
In 2025, expect to see even more promotions for incredible destinations throughout Indonesia. With over 17,000 islands, the possibilities for exploration are endless! As travelers become more aware of the effects of mass tourism in Bali, many are yearning for authentic experiences that feel untouched.
If you’re seeking to uncover Indonesia’s hidden gems, consider exploring lesser-known regions within Bali itself—like the serene North and West Bali—or adding unforgettable destinations like Sumba to your travel plans. It’s easier than ever to create unforgettable memories!
